Gossett Comes Out On Top At Lake Logan Martin
LINCOLN, Ala. – Ezekiel P. Gossett won the Boater Division in the American Bass Anglers Open Series, Presented by Caymas Boats, Alabama South Division 2 tournament, held June 25, 2022, at Lake Logan Martin.
The anglers launched at Lincoln Landing in Lincoln, Ala. Better known as “Zeke,” the angler from Pell City brought in a 5-bass tournament limit for 13.68 pounds.
“I caught three bass in the grass on a swim jig and two on a swimbait in about 10 feet of water,” Gossett stated. “I caught 10 fish and stayed fairly close to the ramp.”
In second among the 26 boaters, Joe A. Wikoff of Phenix City also landed his 5-bass limit. He dropped 12.20 pounds on the scale, including a 3.27-pound kicker.
“I went upriver and caught fish early on top with a Pop-R,” Wikoff reported. “I caught some more on a wacky worm as a follow-up. When I had a limit, I went looking for bigger fish. I caught my bigger fish on a shaky head.”
Filling the third spot for the boaters, John L. Kellett from Odenville landed a 5-bass limit going 11.94 pounds. He anchored that sack with a 3.89-pounder that took the tournament lunker title.
“I threw a little bit of everything,” Kellett commented. “All five of my weigh fish came on different lures. It was a grind. I caught seven fish with only that one good one. I lost one. The big fish hit a jerkbait at about 11 a.m.”
Coming in fourth for the boaters, Patrick K. Dobbins of Opelika brought in five keepers for 10.61 pounds and pocketed $500. Rounding out the top five boaters, Timothy A. Hatcher from Trussville found five good keepers for 9.77 pounds and $350.
In the Co-Angler Division, Kenny D. Moore of Salem, Ala. landed a 3-bass division limit for 6.29 pounds.
“We didn’t go too far from the landing,” Moore said. “I caught all of my fish on either a worm or a jig. We fished in 10 feet of water or less all day. We were fishing real close to the bank and casting out away from the bank to the drop-off.”
Landing in second place, Barry D. Jones from Verbena found three good keepers and tallied 6.29 pounds.
“We went way down the river,” Jones remarked. “We stayed out in open water and never got close to the bank. We found a few brush tops pretty deep. We fished from 18 to 24 feet of water with shaky heads, Carolina rigs, worms and a Zoom Ultra-Vibe Speed Craw, which was hard to beat.”
In third place for the co-anglers, Brian K. Umstead from New Brockton brought in a 3- bass limit at 6.06 pounds. He anchored that sack with a 2.54-pound kicker that won division big bass honors.
“This was the first time I had ever been on this lake,” Umstead revealed. “We went upriver and fished a couple creeks. I caught my first bass on a shaky head. I caught my other two fish on a jerkbait late in the day. I had a blast.”
William B. Wood from Sylacauga finished in fourth place for the co-anglers with three bass going 5.13 pounds. Right behind, Tim P. Adams from Austell, Ga. caught three keepers for 4.73 pounds.
